Suggested Grade Level
Creating a "robotic arm"
Students plan and develop a robotic arm using low budget supplies. Students learn to work in teams as they design, develop, build, and test their designs. The student then modify designs and analyze their solutions.

8-18
CO2 Engineering Challenge
Students will investigate the safety systems utilized in the modern automobile and develop a project that emulates these systems in order to provide protection to a crash test dummy (raw egg) placed in the vehicle as it impacts an oncoming vehicle.

9-12
Build a Toy Workshop
Teams of students in grades 3 to 8 learn about friction, forces, and the engineering design process by building and testing miniature bobsleds to see which can race down an icy slope either the fastest or slowest.

Digest This
Students in grades 6 – 8 reinforce their knowledge of the human digestive system and explore the concepts of simulation and the engineering design process by developing a pill coating that can withstand the churning actions and acidic environment of the stomach. Teams test the coating’s durability by using a clear soda to simulate stomach acid.

Working Together to Live Together
In this lesson, students in grades 8 to 10 experience civil and environmental engineering by planning a housing development while also protecting the native species that live there. They conduct research, draw plans, make brochures, and give presentations, with each four-member team having a project manager, civil engineer, environmental engineer, and graphic designer.
